Goodfellow takes five wickets as Topsham St James Under-15 triumph over Exmouth

PUBLISHED: 11:45 29 May 2014

Topsham St James Under-15s recorded an excellent 26-run victory over neighbours Exmouth.

Batting first the Tops were given a flying start by Charlie Goodfellow and Cameron Robison putting 50 on the score board in nine overs.

Both batted with great sense in the face of some accurate, enthusiastic and fast Exmouth bowling.

They both fell trying to push the score along and then the Exmouth spinners took control mid-innings.

The final five overs of the innings did not live up to the promise of the earlier confident batting and the innings rather faded away to a total of 91, with batsmen not willing to take risks.

However, when the Exmouth reply began it quickly became evident that the Topsham St James total, was a competitive one!

Opening bowlers Jack Telford and Leon Ryder-Potter restricted the Exmouth openers, and as the pressure built, wickets fell at regular intervals.

Goodfellow picked up a couple of lucky wickets when the ball kept unusually low on a normally true wicket, but then displayed his full bag of tricks to confidently take a five wicket haul in haul.

Matt Pring nearly cleaned up the tail on his own, bagging a brace and missing out on two more as straight forward catches were put down.

In the end a reasonable total was easily defended by a combination of good Topsham St James bowling and a few rash shots by the Exmouth batsmen as the last wicket was lost with the score on 65.
