Archant

Exmouth Community College Under-14s were narrowly beaten by Shebbear College in the Devon Cup final.

The match was played at the Maer ground and, after losing the toss Exmouth were sent out into the field.

Opening attack, Ryan Schaufler and Sid Fereday bowled with accuracy and pace early on with Fereday making the initial breakthrough with a smart caught and bowled.

Shebbear’s opening batsman Shawain Baithwaite, on a three month exchange visit to the College, is the Barbados Under-15 skipper and he showed what a class act he is by playing some classic shots from the first delivery he faced.

Halfway through their innings, Shebbear were 96-2 with Tom Taylor-Adey, Richard Hall and Morgan Wright all bowling well.

After drinks Luke Davies was introduced to the attack and picked up a wicket in his third over. More wickets fell, but not the prized one of Braithwaite and the West Indian sailed to a superb century to provide the main contribution to a Shebbear total of 180-6.

Hall ended as the most successful Exmouth bowler with 2-35.

The Exmouth run chase began confidently with 20 runs coming from the first four overs before the Shebbear opening bowlers removed Toomey and Cooke in quick succession leaving the reply on 30-3.

Ed Hurley, in at number four, played a superb innings along with Ryan Schaulfer and skipper Sid Fereday who pushed the score along to 80-4 with 15 overs remaining.

Hurley to play his shots before departing for 34, bowled by Braithwaite. Other principle scores came from Sid Fereday (19), Morgan Wright (22 no) and Tom Taylor-Adey (21 no) in a total of 138-7.

Exmouth College’s Mr Taylor said: “I’d like to congratulate all the boys for their fantastic season and they should all be very proud of their performance. It’s not often you come up against a future West Indian test cricketer.”

The squad would also like to thank local company Ideal Cleaners for their continued support of college cricket.
