Archant

There were mixed fortunes for Exmouth and Budleigh on match day seven of the Francis Clark Devon league season.

Exmouth bounced back to winning ways and climbed two places to sit second in the Premier Division after a 36-run win over North Devon at a sun-kissed Maer ground.

However, Budleigh’s bid to return to the top flight of the Francis Clark Devon League at the first attempt suffered a major blow with the team beaten for the third time this season.

What’s more, having led the table just a month ago, the Ottermouth men head into match day eight - the halfway stage of the campaign - sitting third bottom of the table!

At 147-6 after 31.1 overs Exmouth needed something special to post a competitive total and they got it from Trevor Anning as he hit the game’s top individual score of 75 in a run-a-ball stay at the wicket that saw him stroke five fours. Number eight bat Gary Chappell helped Anning add 73 for the seventh wicket, taking the total past 200 before he fell for 19.

Anning was the last man out, his fine knock coming to an end off the penultimate delivery of the innings with the closing total being 225-8.

Chappell then bowled Somerset player Jamie Overton in the fourth over and thereafter North Devon wickets fell at regular intervals, the final one falling on 189 midway through the 48th over.

At Abbotskerswell, Budleigh skipper Joel Murphy lost the toss, but saw his bowlers, including himself, do a fine job to restrict the home side 173-7 after their allotted 50 overs.

Henry Parkin (6) and Elliott Rice put on 44 for the first Budleigh wicket, but the run chase was hampered with the fall of wickets at regular intervals with the final going down with the reply on 138 to the first ball of the 41st over to consign Budleigh to a disappointing 35-run defeat.

Rice top scored with 29, but only three other Ottermouth players recorded double figure scores.
