Archant

Exmouth CC Under-15s are the very first winners of our new ‘Team of the week’ feature.

The young cricketers can rightly lay claim to being one of the ‘top three’ Under-15 cricket teams in the entire country.

Playing at Rugby School in the ECB Under-15 KO Cup Finals Day, earlier in the week, the young Maer men were edged out by the smallest of margins when beaten by just two runs by Scottish champions Grange who went on to lose to Guildford in the final later the same day.

Indeed, had it not been for the ‘rule’ for the ECB Cup, that meant a player reaching 50 had to ‘retire’, then Exmouth may well have won their semi-final – and then who knows, perhaps gone on to be overall champions.

As it was the team picked themselves up from the heartbreak of their narrow semi-final defeat to win the third/fourth place match, beating Norwich-based Horsford by five wickets to take third place in the 2017 ECB Under-15 Cup.

Exmouth are the only South West team to have got this far, and, given that 1,600 teams were involved in the opening stages of the competition, it is quite an achievement and that’s why we, on the Journal sports desk, salute them as our ‘Team of the Week’.

Look out for a team picture in the next edition of the Exmouth Journal – out next on Thursday, August 24.
