Exmouth Under-12s won the three-team challenge sponsored by County Sports played last week at The Maer ground.

Exmouth Under-12 coach Mark Davies organised what turned out to be a very special day of cricket, one that continued throughout the night as the young Exmouth players camped on the Maer ground outfield.

Ottery and Alphington played the opening game of the tournament which produced a victory for the Otters.

Game two saw the hosts take on Alphington. Batting first The Maer youngsters closed on 126-7 thanks to a superb 70-run opening stand between Max Reader (32 ret’d) and Ed Hurley (31 ret’d).

In reply the Alphas were restricted to 48-7 with Luke Davies (2-3), Morgan Wright (2-7), James Hall (2-13) and Ryan Schaefler (1-5), all claiming wickets from their respective three over spells with the ball.

That set up a final between Exmouth and Ottery St Mary.

Again Exmouth batted first and they were once again given a solid start by Reader (27) and Hurley (31 ret’d) with later runs coming from Ieuan Kidd and George Mills (12no) with the innings closing on 113-2.

The Otters had no answer to the accuracy of the Exmouth bowlers and were restricted to 58-8 in their 20-overs.

Luke Davies claimed 3-17 whilst Morgan Wright (2-9) and Ryan Schaefler (1-13) also bagged wickets.

Mark Davies said: “It really was a most worthwhile experience. I cannot thank County Sports enough for their support and the day itself was supported by some seventy parents and families. My lads stuck around as we turned the evening into a camp on the outfield. Fortunately I had four other parents with me. Mind you I think I got away with much of the night-time policing duties tucked up in my borrowed camper van – with the other supporting parents under canvass! Seriously though, the team were so well behaved throughout and it really was a big success. It’s something I will, certainly look to do again in the future.”
