Exmouth seal last over win at Exeter

PUBLISHED: 10:31 14 August 2014

Exmouth are back in the hunt for the runners-up berth in the Francis Clark Devon League Premier Division after they claimed a thrilling final over, three wicket success at Exeter.

The County Ground side batted first and, led by a superb century from young Ben Green (112), made their way to 265-7 after their allotted 50 overs.

Gary Chappell picked up the biggest haul of wickets, though his ten overs were surprisingly expensive as he was hit for 64 runs.

Trevor Anning picked up a brace of wickets, including the leg before dismissal of centurion Green, and finished with figures of 2-34 from eight overs.

David Lye and Jamie Tapper were the other wicket takers with Lye finishing with 1-53 from his nine overs and Tapper’s account showed 1-23 from three overs.

The run chase was hit by the early loss of Saturday skipper Richard Baggs for four. Seb Benton then helped Sandy Allen restore things as the pair put on 75 for the second wicket inside 15 overs when Allen departed for a 56-ball knock of 63.

Benton was third man out after he had hit 70. Thereafter Andy Buzza (10), Bob Dawson ( 14) and Gary Chappell (run out without scoring), all lost their wickets and, at 186-6 the run chase was labouring.

However, Trevor Anning joined David Lye and the pair added 47 from just 29 balls before Anning was out for 29.

At that stage Exmouth still needed 33 from the final 26 balls, but Lye (48 from 32) and Jamie Tapper (9) saw the side to victory with four balls to spare.

On Saturday Exmouth host Sidmouth before their big day on Sunday at Sidmouth in the Twenty20 Regional Finals.
