Devon to face Suffolk in last eight of the Unicorns Trophy

11:45 29 May 2014

DEVON will be away to Suffolk in the last eight of the Unicorns Trophy after being ousted from top spot in their group, writes Conrad Sutcliffe.

Devon didn’t have a game last Sunday in the group stages as they had already completed their programme.

Wiltshire defeated Wales at Warminster to move ahead of Devon at the top of the table and earn home advantage in the quarter-finals. They will entertain Norfolk in the last eight.

Suffolk and Devon have met before in the knock-out stages of the competition in 2004, not that much cricket was played!

Suffolk scored 288 all out on a rainy day at Torquay – and Devon didn’t get to bat at all.

Rain stopped play and forced a bowl out, which Suffolk won.

The two counties also clashed in the old C&G Trophy at Exmouth in 2003 when Devon’s David Lye won the gold award for hitting a century. Lye, who was also awarded his county cap that day, made 121 in a Devon win by 88 runs.

The game with Suffolk is to be played at Bury St Edmonds on June 15 and that means a long Saturday night journey after the players have all played for their respective clubs in county league matches earlier that day.

When Devon were drawn away to Norfolk in the semi-finals of the 2008 competition, they flew by chartered plane from Exeter to avoid the six-hour road journey.

The alternative was asking players to choose between club or county as the league management at the time was unwilling to bring start times forward to make it easier for players to leave earlier.
