Dawson delivers superb ton at Creedy Park as Exmouth seal second success of fledgling Francis Clark Devon League season

Exmouth made it two wins from three Francis Clark Devon League outings with a 37-run win over Sandford in Mid Devon.

Bob Dawson was the star of the show as he carried his bat, hitting a 147-ball unbeaten 153.

Such was the Dawson dominance of the ball at Creedy Park that he stroked his way to a century in boundaries, hitting twenty fours and thumping four sixes.

He opened with Sandy Allen and the pair had added 69 when Allen was caught off the first ball of the 19th over. Next man in was David Lye, but he had a rare failure, the first of three Exmouth batsmen to have their stumps knocked over, in his case for an 8-ball stay of two runs.

Seb Benton joined Dawson and the pair put on 88 for the third wicket before Benton fell for 26. Skipper Richard Baggs was the only other batsman to lose his wicket, he was bowled for 18 and at the end of the 45th over, four overs after the skipper had been sent back to the pavilion, the declaration was made.

Trevor Anning and Matt Webb opened the bowling, but the early break through came via a smart piece of work by wicketkeeper Sandy Allen that ran out one of the Sandford openers leaving the hosts 14-1. A second wicket fell soon after with Anning winning a leg before decision. Gary Chappell was the first bowling change and once again the talented Devon player delivered almost immediately and went on to claim another three wicket haul for a miserly 23 runs from his ten overs. The Mid Devon side rallied briefly thanks to a 101 run sixth wicket stand, but once that was broken by a Lye catch off the bowling of Anning the game swung Exmouth’s way.

Thirty deliveries after the sixth wicket stand had been broken the final wicket was taken to leave Exmouth comfortable winners and they sit third in the fledgling table, 13 points behind leaders Sidmouth.

On Saturday Richard Baggs and his side entertain a Cornwood side that now includes last season’s record breaking batsman Jackson Thompson who slammed that ‘never to be forgotten’ double century for Bradninch against Budleigh Salterton.
