Davies and Davies bat Exmouth III into a winning position.

13:12 22 August 2014

Nineteen points from their final two games will seal Exmouth III the E Division East title and see them play a division higher next season, writes Ryan Shaufler.

That’s because on Saturday the team brushed aside Filleigh III to secure a ninth victory in eleven outings this season.

Batting first Exmouth were dealt a blow with the loss of opener Dave Grant when the score was just four. Twelve runs were added before fellow opener Julian Page joined Grant in the pavilion. The wickets of Ed Hurley and Roger Wensley also fell to leave the innings a troubled 41-4.

James Horler was next in and he and Donavan Robinson added 29 before Horler was next to go for none and Exmouth were 70-5.

Robinson was the sixth wicket to fall, caught behind for a respectable 30.

Luke Davies joined his father Mark at the wicket and the pair added a superb 80 for the seventh wicket before the younger Davies was stumped for an excellent contribution of 17. Elliot Marks chipped in with a swift 20 before Davies senior was finally out for a match changing knock of 70. Unbeaten alongside Marks at the close of the innings was Tom Taylor 91) as Exmouth went into tea on 204-9.

The Filleigh reply made a steady start as Exmouth openers, Elliot Marks and Tom Taylor, both bowled well, but without taking a wicket.

That honour fell to first change Ed Hurley who swiftly dismissed both openers reducing the run chase to 61-2.

Luke Davies was next to strike, trapping a visiting bat leg before and he double his wicket tally aided by a catch. Elliot Marks took a wicket as did Mark Davies to leave Filleigh 121-7. Marks bagged another to finish his spell with 2-35 from nine overs.

It was Ed Hurley who wrapped things up claiming a wicket double as Filleigh were bowled out for 193 with Hurley’s figures an impressive 4-9 from 7.4 overs.
