The Corney family will remember the first Saturday of August for quite some time – certainly in cricketing terms.

That’s because brother and sister Sam and Emma batted together, putting on 197 for the unbroken fifth wicket in the Exmouth third XI fixture at the Bonfire Field ground in Topsham where Exmouth were in action against the home club’s 2nd XI in a Tolchards Devon League H Division East fixture.

What’s more, in the Bonfire Field score box to record the afternoon’s action was Russell Corney, father of the two batters!

Exmouth III XI skipper Julian Page won the toss and opted to bat first and saw four of the first five batsmen sent back to the pavilion with just 91 runs on the board. Page, set to bat at number seven, sent Emma Corney in to join her brother Sam, and the Page pads stayed on through to tea as the Corney pair despatched the home bowling to all corners of the ground!

The home team used seven different bowlers in an attempt to dislodge the siblings, but they were having none of it and, when the innings closed after the final ball of the 40th over had been delivered, Sam was unbeaten on 108 from 95 deliveries, hitting 18 fours along the way and sister Emma, who faced 68 balls, was not out 67 having struck seven fours.

The pair’s 197-run partnership took their side to a closing total of 288-4. Topsham made a decent fist of their reply, losing their final wicket to the first delivery of the last over of the day with their total on 203. Simon Wooster, batting at number three, was the home side’s top scorer with 46.

In terms of the Exmouth bowling, Joe Graham took the honours with a three wicket return at a cost of 36 runs from 7.1 overs and there were two wickets each for Josh Austin (2-14 from five overs) and Sam Austin (2-42) from eight overs.
