Budleigh were comfortable winners when they met Topsham St James in a South Devon League game.

Openers Charles Parkin (an Under-16 player) and Tom Oxland (an Under-14 player), looked very assured against an equally youthful Tops’ bowling attack.

Just before the drinks break the Budleigh openers chalked up a 100 partnership. Oxland fell just short of his half century when on 46 and Parkin joined him back in the pavilion when he was bowled by a delivery that stayed low and was dismissed for 50.

Topsham then struck back, principally through the bowling of Dom Collins who claimed three wickets.

With 10 overs remaining Harry Collison and Luke Petersen took charge. Petersen hit 39 off 17 balls before being caught at long-on. Collison fell the same way after top scoring with 69 off just 37 deliveries and the innings closed on 267-6.

After tea, superbly crafted by Mrs Short, Budleigh took to the field with a spring in their step!

Bowlers Sid Fereday and Joe Gore worked hard in the sun, both bowling good lines.

Gore struck first with the total on 12. Sid Fereday wasn’t to be outdone and bowled incoming batsman Aaron Clarke with a sublime slower ball. Gore added two more in his fifth over and claimed 3-17. With the match ball now ageing the hosts turned to spin and introduced Under-15 spin pairing Alex Craib and Devon Short.

Topsham’s captain Callum Treleavan batted excellently and kept the score moving and got good support from Dan Armstrong, but the latter was fifth man down when he was caught at slip off the bowling of Devon Short

Alex Craib (2-27) picked up two deserved wickets, one of them with the help of a remarkable catch by Sid Fereday in close at mid-wicket.

In the very next over Devon Short then clean bowled opposition captain Treleavan before setting up a hat-trick chance by clean bowling James Lee. A crowd of close fielders then saw young Callum Davison survive the hat-trick ball!

The final Topsham pair batted doggedly for the next six overs to reach 100 and gain a valuable batting point.

The final wicket was taken by young Short in the 28th over to seal a 167-run Budleigh win.
