Clyst St George gave their hopes of beating D Division East relegation a power of good as they claimed a thrilling 13-run win over Exmouth 2nds at the Maer ground.

Skipper Harry Attwater won the toss and wasted little time in opting to bat first on a baking hot afternoon.

The loss of Freddie Creer (1) and Sam Read (19) early on was a set back and, when Chris Ferro fell for three, Clyst were 42-3. It was soon 72-4 following the loss of Jayakrupakar Nallala for 17 and, when Dan Kendall was fifth man out for 34, the total was 106-5. The sixth man down was Dan Takle (17) and, when Harry Attwater (2) and Bertie Creer (4), fell in quick succession, Clyst St George were wobbling on 160-8. However, the tail wagged as number seven bat Andrew Donovan hit five fours and slammed four sixes on his way to 57 and the innings closed with the final wicket falling with the Maer ground board showing 186 after 42.4 overs.

Greg Marks took the Exmouth bowling honours with his return 5-25 from 6.4 overs while Sean Day and Sam Goodier each bagged a brace of wickets.

The Exmouth reply was launched by James Horler and Richard Baggs and they made their way confidently towards three figures before Sam Read struck with a Nallala catch to remove Horler for 32 with the score then 98-1. Exmouth 2nds skipper Lawrence Greenway joined Baggs, but he was next man out, again falling to a Nallala catch, this time of Andrew Donovan and a quick-fire double for Sam Read, trapping Sam Goodier (4) and Luke Davies (1) leg before to leave the reply 126-4.

Donovan struck again to remove Ollie Pugsley for four and, when Bertie Creer knocked over the stumps of Richard Baggs, who had hit a 12-boundary 78, Clyst St George could ‘smell’ victory. It was duly achieved as the last four wickets fell cheaply with Donovan and Creer both getting another each and Dan Kendall struck twice to see Exmouth all out for 173 in 36.4 overs.
