Budleigh slip to fifth after Ottermouth defeat to table-topping Paignton

Archant

Budleigh lost by the narrowest of margins when they went down by a single wicket at home to Paignton.

What’s more the defeat, the second reversal of the league season means the Ottermouth men have dropped from joint top to fifth in the A Division in the space of a fortnight, but it is all very tight at the top of the table with Budleigh just 11 points behind second placed Barton and 14 adrift of leaders Paignton.

Budleigh’s total of 235 for six looked almost out of Paignton’s reach when they were 150 for seven in reply. However, an eighth-wicket stand of 68 between George Yates and George Benton put the game back in the balance, then Yates with Stephen George and last man Conor Ashworth scrambled over the line.

Batting first Budleigh recovered from losing both James Burke (17) and Henry Parkin (0) with the total on 20. Ben Phillips (29) was third man out with the total on 56.

It was Elliott Rice who provided the main contribution as he batted for just over two-and-a-half hours, faced 121 balls and was not out 71, hitting ten fours, when the innings came to a close on 235-6 after 50 overs.

A century opening stand suggested that Paignton would find the run chase a stroll, the openers adding 108 inside 17 overs when James Burke struck with the aid of a Lloyd Lowman catch to make the break through.

One hundred and seven without loss became 112 for five as Budleigh fought back to hold the high ground.

It was that eighth wicket stand of 68 that saw the game swing back towards the visitors ands they duly edged their way over the line with their last two at the wicket!

On Saturday Budleigh head to South Devon to meet third bottom Abbotskerswell.

Other games in the section include leaders Paignton host third-placed Plympton and second in the table Barton travel to fourth placed Bradninch.
