Budleigh seconds led to victory by skipper White’s splendid ton and a another big Carter innings
08:55 15 May 2014
Budleigh 2nmd XI opened a 16-point gap at the top of the A Division after a 148-run win over Chudleigh.
Skipper Lloyd White lost the toss and Chudleigh captain Matt Ball had no hesitation in bowling first with dark clouds up above and a green wicket.
White opened up with Joe Marley and, for the second time this early season, the pair put on 50 for the first wicket. Marley played some glorious cover drives until a rush of blood he decided to dance down the wicket and was stumped for 17 with the score on 59. Wicketkeeper Dan Messom returned to the side and was run out for eight and that brought Ben Carter to the crease to join White and the pair put on a mammoth 164 between
them with both players displaying a fine array of strokes and sixes to guide the Otters to a large total.
Carter’s splendid 98 came from just 61 balls and he
perished two runs shy of what would have been a richly deserved century when he went for one big shot
too many and was caught at long off!
White reached his century in style launching the ball over midwicket for six before he fell in similar circumstances to Cart, caught on the boundary for 107.
James England made a quick-fire 24 and the Budleigh innings closed on 288-5.
After tea the new ball pair of Adam Jones and Matt Murphy bowled brilliantly. The former got the ball rolling when White took a quick catch at second slip. Murphy was next to strike leaving Chudleigh a troubled 10-2. The visitors failed top recover and just two of their number registered double figures as they were bowled out for 135 with Adam Jones, James Plowman, Alex Craib, Murphy and Chris Battin sharing the remaining wickets between them.
On Saturday the 2nd XI are again at home when they entertain Cornwood II (2.30pm).
