Budleigh gave their Francis Clark top flight survival mission a real boost with a 33-run win at Bradninch.

Not only did the victory lift Joel Murphy’s side out of the bottom two, it also dragged the Mid Devon side into the relegation mix which further increases the Budleigh bid to stay up.

The victory was all the sweeter for Murphy given the fact he used to skipper Bradninch and he returned to haunt his old team with a captain’s innings, hitting an unbeaten 22 from the number nine slot to see his side to what proved a match winning total of 176-6.

The earlier work had been done by opener Gamindu Amarasinghe (35) and James Hudson (38).

However, a number of the Budleigh batsmen will not need reminding of the shots they played to get themselves out! None more so than the Sri Lankan opener and also Bob Dawson!

The Mid Devon side made a bright start, but it was Amarasinghe who made the all-important initial, break though. At 70-4 the game was heading Budleigh’s way.

However, then the hosts rallied with a half century partnership between Devon County player Matt Golding and the Bradninch player-coach Paul Tweddle.

The former was clean bowled by Hudson and when Tweddle followed soon after caught by Bob Dawson off the bowling of Joel Murphy it sparked a collapse that saw five wickets taken in the space of 31 deliveries and when the final wicket fell at 143 it left Murphy’s men deserving winners.

All five of the Budleigh bowlers claimed wickets, the pick of then figures were the 4-36 from Hudson whilst both Murphy and Amarasinghe picked up a couple of wickets apiece.

Heading into the last four games Budleigh now sit 16 points clear of the bottom two. Heathcoat (109 points) and Sandford (110) sit in the relegation berths.

Then it’s Torquay (123) with Budleigh next, sitting 10 points behind Bradninch.

It’s Sidmouth at home on Saturday after which they travel to Torquay and then host neighbours Exmouth before completing the season on September 1, at Plymouth.
