Budleigh’s bid to return to the Francis Clark Devon League top flight at the first time of asking suffered a huge blow when they returned from their visit to table-topping Paignton having been well and truly mauled and banking not a single point for their pains.
Budleigh batted first at Paignton and, five minutes shy of two hours after the first delivery, they were all out for the princely sum of 57!
Just two players registered double figure scores with Luke Peterson, batting at number three, hitting 13 and Ben Phillips, notching 11.
The first to fall was opener Henry Parkin, bowled without troubling the scorer early in the third over. James Burke was joined by Peterson and the pair took the total to 23 in the ninth over when Burke was trapped leg before. Peterson fell before another run was added and Jack Dart was next in, and out, in his case another victim of the leg before rule for six.
It was 44-5 when player-coach Ben Phillips was run out and Eliot Rice was next out and he was swiftly followed by young Ben Phillips.
The end came quickly with the final five wickets falling for the addition of seven runs in 5.2 overs with the final wicket falling to the final ball of the 29th over. Paignton took just 47 deliveries to seal a nine wicket win and take a big step towards top flight cricket next season.
James Burke took the one wicket aided by a catch from Lloyd Murrin.
The defeat leaves the Ottermouth men needing to win their last two to stand any chance of promotion
Their cause is helped by the fact that this weekend they entertain basement side Abbotskerswell whilst Plympton face Paignton. The fourth of the teams in the promotion race, Bradninch, who Budleigh visit on Saturday week for the final game of the campaign, are at Barton this coming match day.
Heading into this weekend’s penultimate round of fixtures the top four in the A Division table looks like this:
Paignton 16 237
Plympton 16 217
Bradninch 16 214
Budleigh 16 209
