The second half of the season started off in similar fashion to the first as Budleigh Salterton II convincingly beat Plymouth III by nine wickets, writes Sean Mills.

Budleigh won the toss and invited the visitors to bat first on a greenish looking strip. Opting for spin, the Otter’s skipper opened the bowling with Craib (1-15) and Marley (2-7).

The tactic paid off with two early wickets and very few runs conceded in the first 15 overs.

The spin attack continued with a double bowling change of Gore (1-20) and White (2-26) kept up the pressure and knocked over another three quick wickets to reduce the visitors to 38 for 5.

The middle-order then dug-in and accumulated another 28 runs at a snail’s pace, but just as they were starting to look settled the bowling attack changed to seam.

Mills made the breakthrough claiming two wickets for seven runs whilst the final pair of wickets were snared by Murphy (1-12) and Battin (1-3) as the home innings came to a close in the 42nd over with 91 on the board.

White and Messom (16), opened the batting for Budleigh after the tea interval.

Having looked comfortable from the start, the quick-scoring Messom was caught sweeping which brought Sharkey to the wicket with the score on 22. The early scare gave the visitors hope however this was short-lived by a fine display of positive batting by Sharkey who finished unbeaten on 31, and White (35no), as victory was sealed as early as the 16th over of the reply.

With ten games gone and eight to play in the A Division campaign the top three are; Cornwood (174), Budleigh (154) and Ipplepen (143).

This Saturday the Otters travel to face basement dwellers Chudleigh where they will be looking to increase the gap between second and third with a fourth win in a row.
