Budleigh’s bid to return to the top flight of the Francis Clark Devon League at the first attempt suffered a major blow with the team beaten for the third time this season.

What’s more, having led the table just a month ago, the Ottermouth men head into match day eight - the halfway stage of the campaign - sitting third bottom of the table!

All is certainly not lost in terms of the promotion bid for they are just 26 points behind new leaders Bradninch who they entertain this Saturday (June 28) at Ottermouth.

Hosts Abbotskerswell won the toss, opted to bat first, and were 41 for four midway through the 21st over!

The middle order battled away and the team limped to a closing total of 173-7 after their allotted 50 overs.

A run-rate of three-and-a-half per over looked well within the range of the Budleigh batsmen.

However, after Henry Parkin (6) and Elliott Rice put yon 44 at four runs per over wickets fell and at 91-6 after 25.2 overs it needed the Budleigh tail to wag significantly if another defeat was to be avoided.

Sadly only James Leat (18no) and Lloyd Murrin (12) reached double figures amongst the final seven batsmen and the last wicket went down with the score on 138 to the first ball of the 41st over to consign Budleigh to a disappointing 35-run defeat.
