Budleigh 2nds net rare success with home win over Braunton

Budleigh 2nds, already consigned to a bottom three finish in their Tolchards Devon League C Division East campaign, picked up only a third win of the season as they defeated Braunton by eight runs in a close encounter at Ottermouth.

After being asked to bat first, Budleigh were led to a closing total of 233-9 by a superb century from Ben Carter, striking nine fours and three sixes before being dismissed shortly after reaching his century.

Skipper Nick Boult hit 44 as he and Carter added 131 for the fifth wicket, and there was a knock of 41 from opener Donovan Robinson.

At 143-3, the Braunton run chase was looking set for a successful conclusion, but Budleigh hit back with opening seamer Matt Murphy (2-48) coming back for a second spell to claim two wickets and the visitors were bowled out for 225 with just one ball of their 45 overs remaining. James Leat (3-45) and Joe Marley (2-35) were the other principal wicket takers.

On Saturday (August 2), Budleigh host a Sidmouth 2nd XI that has to win to have any chance of taking their title bid to the final day the week after.
