Budleigh Salterton 2nd eleven have just completed a terrific season in the Tolchards Drinks Devon League 2nd XI Premier Division, writes Conrad (Tom) Thomas.

The team, with a fine mix of experience and youth, made sure that they did not follow what has, I recent years, been very much the case that aside promoted to the top flight – either struggles manfully or goes straight back down!

Season 2016 saw the team, under the leadership of Alex Richardson, gain promotion from the A Division into the top flight.

The 2017 Budleigh IIs were skippered by Dan Messom who led a fair number of the previous season’s squad plus a few additions.

Across the four month league campaign there were some excellent contributions from the youngsters.

I must say I have personally been impressed with the likes of A Taylor, M Mejzner, C Parkin, the Oxland brothers, and the Doble brothers plus S Ferraday (who has also represented the 1st XI).

All of whom I remember from those years ago when I assisted with the club’s Under-10s and Under-11s youth teams at Ottermouth.

The leading wicket taker was Adam Jones who came up through the youth ranks.

The experienced Ian Messom scored the most runs for the team who completed the 18-match season with eight wins and eight defeats while the other two matches they were set to play were washed out by summer rains!

Their total of 221 points meant they finished a single point – and place – above neighbours and rivals Exmouth II.

The third place finish for Budleigh means that, in next year’s all-through league, the Ottermouth men will play in what will be known as the new C Division East, where they will come up against the two teams finishing above them in this year’s 2nd XI Premier Division – champions Sidmouth II and runners-up Bovey Tracey II plus the 1st XIs from Ottery St Mary (as the basement side in the B Division 1st XI this year) together with this years C Division East 1st XI teams Alphington, Feniton, Whimple, Clyst Hydon, Kilmington and Braunton.
