BIG BERTHA - not the World War One German artillery piece but the tropical storm of the same name - has forced the postponement of today’s ECB NatWest Club Twenty20 finals day at Sidmouth, writes Conrad Sutcliffe.

The ex-Caribbean hurricane was forecast to hit the South West overnight, causing problems for the day of cricket on the Fortfield.

Sidmouth is one of eight venues all over the country picked for the last-32 play-offs.

St Just, Exmouth, Port Talbot Town and Taunton St Andrews were due to battle it out.

In view of the forecast of heavy rain, and the distances involved for Port Talbot and St Just, organisers deciced yesterday morning to postpone until next Sunday’s wet weather contingency day.

Next Sunday’s winner will go through to a final eliminator on Sunday, August 24 to determine which four teams will go through to the national final at Northampton CCC on September 9.

The action from Wantage Road will be televised live on Sky.

St Just are no strangers to the being on Sky as they have made finals day before, in 2008 and 2001, where they lost in the last four.

The postponement will rob Exmouth of opening bowler Trevor Anning, who will be playing for Devon against Berkshire in the Minor Counties Championship next week.

St Just currently have no players in Cornwall’s three-day side travelling to Bournemouth to play Dorset.
