The finals of the Budleigh internal championships were held over three days and fortunately were not badly affected by the weather.

The 2012 Men’s Champion is Allan Cottle who won a close match with Rod Davidson.

Cottle was denied the ‘double’, losing in the 2-wood final to Gerry Roberts after a marathon 29 ends. Paul Griffin overcame Tim Holding to win the Handicap Cup and the new mixed pairs Champions are Brian Alabaster and Ann Cottle, who survived a late surge from Audrey Taylor and Tony Stone who scored twelve shots over the final seven ends.

The new holder of the Novice Cup is Stuart Butler who, five shots adrift after 15 ends, finished strongly to defeat Don Huish by 21 shots to 19.

The men’s pairs final can accurately be described as a game of two halves.

Play was halted by rain on Monday with the score locked at six-all and will resume on Saturday.

Gerry Roberts is skipping John Vanstone against Don Huish and Tony Stone. Competition Secretaries, Avril Bartlett and Rod Davidson are to be congratulated on their efforts to constantly re-arrange the order of play to accommodate participants engaged in conflicting competitions and to allow a respite for those who had fought their way through in more than one discipline.

In the Over-60’s Triples League, Budleigh’s B team could consider themselves very unfortunate not to have taken six points from their match at the Tiverton Borough Club. Peter Cooper guided David Blackwell and Jeff Rigg to an 18–12 victory, having recovered from a six point deficit after 11 ends. On the second rink Graham Ellis’ side were holding shot on the last end, only to see the opposing skip move the jack and score three shots.

The potential 14–17 score thus became 13–20 and the sought-after six points became two. Hard luck, lads !

We congratulate David Blackwell, Rod Davidson and Gerry Roberts for their performance in the County Triples competition.

The semi-final was played at Brixham against Victoria Park Bideford and ended dramatically.

After 17 ends the score was 16-all and, when the 18th was declared a tie by the umpire, Budleigh won the additional end by one shot to go through! Final victory against representatives from the Plymoutb Civil Service Club eluded them, but all credit for a great run of victories against stiff opposition.

Ladies Captain Diane Dixon took six mixed rinks to Phear Park for a very enjoyable afternoon’s bowling against our old friends.

Budleigh were successful on four rinks, but to quote a phrase coined by a respected former captain: “On occasions like this, the score doesn’t really matter (unless Budleigh wins !)”.

Margaret Spencer, George Woolacott, Bunty Hudson and David Blackwell were on top form, winning by 15 shots.

Ron Tyler’s rink of Margaret Ratcliffe, Peter Cooper and Stewart Spencer staged a remarkable recovery, having trailed 10-20 on the 14th end.

The home side failed to score again and conceded 13 shots leaving Ron’s team the victors by 23 shots to 20. Other winning skips were Stuart Butler, plus 9 and Ann Cottle plus one.

With the start of the indoor season approaching, the organisers of the evening leagues still require more members to participate. In order to field viable teams in the Symes, Robinson and Lee evening league and the Exonia and Sidmouth leagues, we need more support, - so please add your name to the lists.

Finally, we have an Open Day scheduled for Saturday, September 29, from 10am to 4pm, when interested members of the public are invited to come along, receive free tuition and experience bowling, both indoors and out. Equipment can be provided without cost so why not ‘bowl along’ to our friendly club in Cricket Field Lane and try your hand.
