Comets 30, Bluebirds 24
For the first match of the new season Comets were up against new team to the league, Bluebirds, writes Louise Passmore.
Comets were without their regular goal attack so defender Ali Moxey volunteered for the crucial role.
The Bluebirds have recruited a number of the disbanded Wasps Juniors team and the team gelled really well and looked as if they had been playing together for years!
Ginny Coggles and Maria Mugford, shooting for Bluebirds, were up against a tough Comets defence of Annabel Russell and Yvonne Sparkes. Any missed shots were clinically picked up and swiftly converted into goal scoring chances for Comets.
Centre court for Comets of Gill Hall, Sally George and Carol Goddard worked hard throughout the match and kept Ali Moxey and shooter Tracey Cartwright, who was on top form, well supplied with shooting chances.
The first quarter ended with Comets leading 8-3, but Bluebirds didn’t allow them to pull any further ahead with the half-time score at 15-10 and three quarters time at 23-18.
Mel Mugford moved to her usual goal attack position and kept the pressure on Comets defence whilst at the other end Bluebirds defensive team of Kerry Angila and Traci Markell hoovered up any loose passes from the Comets attack.
Centre court for Bluebirds Lucy Carpenter, Lorraine Coombes and Melissa Baxter-Hunter were solid throughout the game but it was the fast reactions from Comets goal defence Yvonne Sparkes that was the turning point in the last quarter.
With Comets centre court tiring a little Yvonne Sparkes truly lived up to her name! She made a number of superlative interceptions to turn the ball over and keep Comets ahead as they ran out winners by 30 goals to 24.
Players of the match were Kerry Angila for Bluebirds and Yvonne Sparkes for Comets.
