Comets 28, Bicton 27

Comets exacted sweet revenge for an earlier season defeat at the hands of Bicton when they claimed victory in a seriously close encounter, writes Louise Passmore.

Bicton began well, racing into a four goal lead, but Comets rallied and reduced the deficit to one of two goals at the end of the first quarter.

Comets were much sharper at the restart and both sides began to see fewer passes going astray giving the shooters for the respective teams opportunities to convert chances into goals. At the half-way mark just a single score separated the teams.

In the third quarter Bicton’s defence of Sally Eade and Katie Marsh put in strong performances, intercepting any loose balls coming into the circle. However Cara Monaghan and Tracey Abbott, shooting for Comets, gave very little away and rarely missed a shot!

Fourteen-year-old Anya Kilburn, the Bicton goal attack kept a cool head and her movement around the circle and accurate shooting were instrumental in helping her team increase their lead to two goals by three-quarter time.

The final quarter began with a flurry of goals for Comets. Defensive duo Yvonne Sparkes and Rachael Clements intercepted a number of passes going into the Bicton circle and Comets centre court made sure the ball was safely passed to their own shooters.

All this saw Comets edge ahead for the first time in the contest, but Bicton restored parity with just a minute remaining.

Comets scored on the next centre pass to edge ahead again and it was only the final whistle that stopped Bicton from drawing level!

The Players of the Match were Sally Eade for Bicton and Yvonne Sparkes for Comets.
