Comets defeat Assent in Exmouth Netball League meeting

A new season of the Exmouth and District Netball League has got under way and there are three new teams competing, writes Pamela Taylor.

The new teams are Gazelles, Kenn Valley and Tigers.

In an opening game of the new campaign, Comets were 51-31 winners over Assent.

Both sides looked rusty after the summer lay-off, but Comets struck first.

Assent goal shooter Claire Hodge was in fine form as were Assent defenders Louise Cocks and Rachel Cotton, who made sure that every Comets pass into the circle had to be spot on, otherwise it was intercepted and turned into a counter attack.

However, Comets continued to increase their lead over Assent and, although it wasn’t pretty at times, they had begun to cohere as a team by the third quarter.

Katie Tyrell is a welcome addition to the Comets squad following the retirement of Ali Moxey last season and junior Bryony Monaghan has settled seamlessly into the team.

The Player of the Match awards went to Claire Hodge for Assent and to Comets’ goal defence, Yvonne Sparkes, who always gives her all and plays a fair but competitive game.
