Exmouth director of rugby Chris Wright hailed the Cockles first win at the higher level after they defeated Bournemouth 33-18 in a game watched by another healthy crowd at the Imperial Ground, writes Steve Birley.
Wright said: “The team responded to the Taunton defeat in the ideal way. We did make a few personnel changes and that certainly played a part, but the key to this victory was self-belief. That was something that I saw coming through in the midweek training session and the players deserve great credit for their approach to the Bournemouth match. I do think there was also an element of the visitors feeling that, after we’d been beaten twice. They could just turn up and go through the motions. However, it’s clear that hard work and consistency are going to be key features this season and, based on what was served up on Saturday, we have shown we can compete at this level.”
On Saturday the Cockles are again at home with London Irish Amateurs the visitors. Having lost their first three games, Saturday’s opponents will be keen to get their own campaign up and running. The Cockles were beaten to the title by London Irish last season, but the Imperial Ground meeting last season when the way of the Cockles and more of the same is hoped for this time!
