Conditions were tough at Budleigh last Saturday for the latest East Devon Golf Club competition, writes Paul Willoughby.

A strong cold westerly wind with driving rain in the afternoon presented conditions less than ideal for the one hundred hardy souls that braved the elements for the monthly Stableford.

Only one player managed to score under his handicap, Keith Luff from Exmouth, who had an excellent 39 points - which will result in a reduction in his handicap. All credit to him in those very testing conditions.

There were no fewer than ten 2’s who shared a pot of £148: Godfrey Kent, Noel Westlake, Mark Lavers, David J Watson, Alan Dent, Tony Williams, Charlie Collins, Steve Ross, Alan Dewhurst and Colin Thomas.

In terms of the winners. In Division One it was Dennis Chivers (9 handicap) with 34 points who pipped Bill Norris (6), who also carded 34 points, with count-back used to determine first and second. In third place was Bill Nicholson (7) with 33 points.

In Division Two there was a win for Julian Reynolds (16 handicap). The Club Secretary landed first place with a score of 35 points and once again count back was deployed after Bernard Ireson (15) also finished on 35 points, but had to settle for second place. Third was Greg Evans (13) with 33 points.

In Division Three the winner with 39 points was Keith Luff (20 handicap). Second was Ray Sturman (18) with 36 points (and that, given the weather conditions, is likely to lead to a handicap cut), whilst third was Colin Thomas (20) with 34 points. The next competition will be the Medal on March 3.
