The East Devon monthly stableford was played on Saturday, writes Paul Willoughby.

You can tell that Spring is here as 111 hopefuls entered the competition. Stableford’s usually attract a larger number than the unforgiving medals where every shot counts – even if you do take half a dozen shots to get out of a bunker! The weather was cold to start with but sunny and warmer as the morning wore on and I saw him again – Yes, that chap with the short trousers. There I was with still three layers of clothing and this fellow was in shorts and I believe, a short sleeved shirt as well. He was younger than me by a few decades (I find there are more of those around these days!) but to wear that gear he was either nuts, pretending he wasn’t cold when actually he was (quite likely) or a Royal Marine – they can cope with anything. Whoever he was I hope he did well as goose pimples can ruin your game!

Despite the benign conditions the Standard Scratch (I may decide to explain that in an article one day. On the other hand I may not – I fear a lot of eyes would glaze over!) for the competition was 72 so the course was no push over.

The clear winner of the March Stableford was Bruce Chapman with 42 points from a handicap of five, now four. Well done, Bruce. The other leading scorers were:

Division 1; 2, Dave JP Watson, 36 points (6 now 5); 3, Paul Webber, 35 points (6); 4, Gordon Benzie 34 (5); 5, Jim Colvin, also 34 from a handicap of 3.

Division 2; 1, Ian Andrew, 36 points (15 now 14); 2, John Connolly, 35 points (12); 3, Mike Trapnell, also 35 points (13 now 12); 4, Terry Harris, also 35 points (13 now 12).

Division 3; 1, Norman Forte, 35 points (19); 2, Robin Grenyer, also 35 points (16 now 15); 3, Rob Winter, 34 points (20); 4, Keith Luff, 33 points (18)

There was a twos pot of £218 to be shared between 13 players – Bruce Chapman had two of them; that’s good play, Bruce.

East Devon is an exceptionally good golf course and club, and always welcomes new members.
