The atrocious weather could have put an end to both the main competition and the subsequent ‘Drive In’ marking the start of the Woodbury Park new captains’ year of office, writes Carol Pye.
Thankfully, the sun shone and the important programme was able to go ahead. Nearly 100 players (an excellent turn out for the conditions) took part in a team stableford with a Texas Scramble start.
The winners were Pete Lawrence, Jim Holland, Davy Brady and Tony Taylor 53.5 points whilst the runners-up, Pete Watson, Robert Dart, John Collier-Marsh and Jeff Kempster came in with 55.1 nett.
The ‘Drive In’ took place after the competition. It involves last year’s Captains finishing their year by putting out on the 18th green from where they landed after their drive in a year earlier.
The incoming Captains, David Cockayne Jnr (Juniors), Duncan Ratley (Mens), Angela Mullerworth (Ladies), Graham Nye (Seniors) then drove over the pond on the 18th hole to get as near as possible to the pin, (not easy in front of over 150 (spectators!).
A very enjoyable day concluded with presentations and fund raising for this year’s charity, ‘Balloons’.
This local charity was founded four years ago, covering Exeter, Mid and East Devon and provides support for children, young people and their families following a death, or before an expected death, of a significant person in their lives.
The resulting collection of over £700 was an excellent start towards this year’s target. A four course meal ended a very successful day.
