Comets 35, Bicton 23

Comets began the match with six players, a mix up with the match time meant that one of their players missed the first quarter!

Goal attack, Pamela Taylor, moved back to cover the goal defence position as the team began the game without a wing defence.

Comets started strongly and were just able to hold a 2 goal lead by the end of the first quarter. Luckily shooters, Tracey Cartwright and Cara Monahan, were on form with Gill Hall and Sally George working hard to make up for the lack of a wing defence. Annabel Russell at goal keeper intercepted a number of Bicton’s incoming passes into the circle to turn the play over.

With the arrival of their goal defence, Comets were at full strength for the start of the second quarter as Bicton settled into their game.

Katherine Kilburn, centre for Bicton, dominated their centre court sending and receiving passes to eventually find a way through the Comets defence. Shooters Loraine Bowring and Debbie Hewitt made use of every chance they were given and converted them into goals.

During the third quarter Comets had the edge gradually increasing their lead to begin the final quarter with a ten goal lead. But after making a number of positional changes Bicton turned over two Comets centre passes, scoring each time to reduce the deficit by four goals within the first two or three minutes.

Comets came back strongly and held their nerve as Bicton felt the pressure towards the end of the game and a flurry of goals from Comets saw them win the game 35 goals to 23.

Players of the match: Comets; Sally George (wing attack); Bicton; Sally (goal defence).
