Budleigh Salterton 3, Pinhoe Warriors 1
Budleigh Salterton Under-16s kept their Exeter and District Youth League Under-16 Division Two promotion bid firmly on track with their first clean sheet league success at Greenway Lane this season, writes SpursTom.
The hosts were into their stride from the opening exchanges testing Pinhoe full-backs with determined runs down the flanks whilst the five-man midfield provided some attractive one-touch football.
The interplay was certainly good on the eye and the early enterprise was rewarded with a well taken goal by Liam Liddell, neatly looping his shot over the advancing keeper.
He thought he’d doubled the advantage moments later, but was judged to be offside.
Even with the windy conditions the first period was developing into an interesting game with the visitors coming back strongly, forcing several corners, but unable to find the target before the break.
The Pinhoe gloves man denied the young Robins twice in the opening minutes of the second half, but was helpless as another pin-point corner from Luke Bland caused confusion in the box, with James Clarke netting.
Any threat by the lads from Exeter was blunted by the home defence whose keeper was having a quiet game.
The same cannot be said for his opposite number Charlie Percival who was busy throughout and beaten once more by James Clarke.
Thanks to the skills of young Percival the Exeter-based side lost by only a three-goal margin!
On Saturday the Robins entertain a Heavitree Rockets team that sits top of the table and who come to Greenway Lane looking to chalk up a tenth win in as many league outings!
