Budleigh Salterton 3, Ottery St Mary 5
Budleigh were knocked out of the Under-15 cup in a Greenway Lane game of two contrasting halves, writes SpursTom.
Due to the absence of central defender and captain Max Goodesmith, this double responsibility was handed to Tom Rocky; he must have been happy with the start made as Joe Walker won a corner, which was taken by Ben Hitchcock, it was not cleared and Russel Williams stole in to open the scoring, much to the delight of the home faithful.
The equalizer arrived via a throw-in and precise interplay football which ended with Jamie Hill unleashing a low shot past the keeper’s outstretched right hand.
Budleigh’s two wide men were working well, making it difficult for the visiting defence whose keeper was called upon to pull off some smart saves.
However, he was beaten when Tom Rocky advanced forward and about 20-yards out lobbed him perfectly to restore the home lead.
Ottery woke up and mounted attack after attack, struck the post more than once, but then fell further behind!
Skilful footwork and a centre by Ewan Anderson was met by Joe walker to fire Budleigh into a 3-1 lead.
There was still time in the first half for Brett Lines to twice deny the visitors, first with a splendid goal-line clearance and then with some superb individual play.
Supporters for Ottery St. Mary must have arrived during the interval, for theirs were the voices to be heard, that and that, or the half-time talk by the Otters coach spurred them on.
They tore into the Robins relentlessly and were rewarded with two goals in the 50th and 52nd minutes through Harry McNamara-Campbell, and a second for Hill.
From that moment there appeared to be only one likely winner, and it was not the home team, just let us say they were second best in all departments, but we still waited until the 70th minute for the visitors to make it 4-3 when Connor Swingler scored.
Glovesman Scott Bockenski made a splendid save before Jamie Hill completed his hat-trick as the Otters progressed to the next round.
