Budleigh Salterton Reserves 2, Feniton 1

A great cheer greeted the final whistle at Greenway Lane last Saturday, not just because the Budleigh Reserves’ league wins column went into double figures for the season, writes SpursTom.

Oh no, it was the joy of finally beating bogey team Feniton, also one of the Premier Division’s top four.

The home manager actually had 19 players in attendance as he pleasingly saw his team take a fifth minute lead when skipper Carl Wilson, deceived Matt Kingdom in the Feniton goal with a 35-yard lob.

With a quarter of an hour gone the visitors were given a chance to equalize, when to everyone’s amazement a free kick was awarded for an alleged back pass in the crowded penalty area, but any danger was averted.

Budleigh’s plan to stop the feed to the oppositions danger-men looked to be working until the 43rd minute when a run up the left flank and centre was smartly put away by Charlie Selley for a 1-1 interval score-line.

The game flowed evenly from end to end looking for any chinks in either defences armour, but surprisingly the two keepers were only required to do routine saves.

The only goal of the half was almost a carbon copy of that equalizer, the difference being Budleigh’s Aarron Denny was the one now doing the run and cross which substitute Sam Schlaefli converted on 62 minutes.

The Acland Park boys threw everything at the Robins, but Man of the Match Carl Wilson bullied his teammates into preserving that advantage to complete a famous victory breaking that hoodoo spell.

This was an exceptional contest between two good sides.

Budleigh: Richardson, Pearce, Perkins, Nield, Stevens, Demetre, Riddell, Radford, Wilson, Higham, Denny, Schlaefli and Perry.

Feniton: Matt Kingdom, Blackmore, Sawyer, Simic, Frankpitt, Allen, Selley, Ede, Jewell, Everett, O’Connor, Lewis and Mark Kingdom.
