Tiverton Town Reserves 2, Budleigh Reserves 0
It seemed like a daunting task lay ahead for the Robins on their fourth away trip in succession this fledgling season, writes SpursTom.
Facing a free scoring Tiverton Town it was the visitors who started brighter with two corners and some near misses early on, whilst at the other end glovesman Mike Pidgeon had to be alert on two occasions.
A third corner was won and the home keeper was saved by a defender following an error. It was 20 minutes before Tivvy got in their first shot and it sailed over the bar.
A Budleigh attack was broken down, but the counter attack was halted by a well-timed tackle from Zack Pearce.
Both he and Dave Radford were working well in the centre of Budleigh’s defence.
Both keepers were kept busy, and there was a brilliant diving save from the home glovesman.
On 37 minutes Tiverton’s first corner lead to a goal somewhat against the run of play, it was partly cleared but when the ball returned into the Budleigh area Max Bristow scored. The same player was later booked for unfair challenge on Mike Pidgeon.
A home corner was cleared just on halftime, but the better team trailed at the break.
Tiverton wasted no time in getting the experienced Sam Dibling on the field for the second period having missed the kick-off.
The first 15 minutes was another good spell for the visitors, but a combination of not producing the required final pass and sound defending kept the hosts goal intact. A double substitution failed to bring the equalizer, and they paid for those missed chances.
On 71 minutes a lack of communication between keeper and defender resulted with Zack Pearce heading into his own goal to give Tiverton a two-goal cushion.
They now played better on the wide pitch they are used to. Even following their final substitution the Robins just could not finish their good approach work, plus Karl Riddell was booked.
They will be disappointed for they all put in a spirited display showing they can be a handful for anyone.
The Man of the Match award was given to Karl Riddell and Dave Radford.
