Budleigh’s teams in the Over-60s Triples Leagues are making amends for early season disappointments.

Current efforts to move away from the lower reaches of their respective divisions are bearing fruit with two more victories to report this week.

In Division Three the A squad narrowly overcame Ottery A by 36 shots to 34, thanks to Peter Hillman, Alan Pearson and Gerry Roberts whose score was boosted by a six on the 15th end which contributed to their twelve shot win!

Division Seven high-flyers, Feniton B, who had defeated Budleigh B on their own ground, were shocked by a confident display which resulted in Budleigh winning on both rinks.

Don Huish, Bill Barber and Burges Stace scored 24 to 16 and the 20-12 result from Tony Lim, Barnard Brace and Gearge Woolacott, netted eight valuable points.

A four rink mixed home friendly against Exonia ended in Budleigh’s favour by 65 to 50. Ann Vincent, Jean Watts and Rob Jerrard were the biggest winners on plus nine, followed by Mo Bond, plus four and Marilyn Jackson, plus three.

The annual Victory Cup competition was played in broad sunshine despite a gloomy forecast. Six local clubs sent teams to play against six host sides in the usual round-robin format and play was limited to 20 ends, deemed sensible on a day of high temperatures. A very enjoyable afternoon’s bowling was punctuated by a superb tea.

Thanks must be recorded to the hard-working Budleigh lady members.

The event was organised by captain John Vanstone, ably assisted by Bernard Brace who, as usual, took care of the raffle.

The cup was won by friends from Phear Park who also received bottles of wine, as did the runners-up from Topsham.

Booby prizes were presented to one of the home teams, but the names are withheld to protect the guilty!

The latter stages of the club’s internal championships are now being contested with the final scheduled for the September 6 and 7.

Recent results include Leighton Burston’s progression to the final of the singles championship and the semi-final of the Novice Cup alongside Graham Ellis.

Three of the four semi-finalists for the Handicap Singles Cup are now known and they are Brian Alabaster, Burges Stace and the afore-mentioned Leighton Burston.
