Budleigh ladies were involved in a thrilling quarter final Westward Development Devon League Cup tie that saw them ultimately edged out by the odd goal in seven, writes SpursTom.
What made the Budleigh effort all the more impressive was that the opposition play a division higher!
The match was switched to Budleigh’s Greenway Lane pitch due to problems at the Tedburn St Mary venue.
Neither team had played for several weeks, but the Ladies from Exeter began the stronger making continuous charges at the Robinettes defence, but the hosts survived and, on 24 minutes, surprisingly took the lead with an own goal.
Within minutes it became 2-0, a penalty being awarded for a trip on lone striker Celine White, which Abby Yukon calmly converted. Budleigh’s keeper Katherine Binmore preserved that first half lead with some excellent handling.
With almost quarter of an hour gone in the second period, Exeter’s gloves-person pulled off brilliant tip over the bar, inspired by this her colleagues charged once more winning a corner from which was headed home. Five minutes later the equaliser came in somewhat controversial fashion, an attacker appeared to handle the ball passed the keeper, this went unpunished and attempts to stop the goal was in vain. Justice seemed to have been attained with Abby Yukon regaining Budleigh’s advantage direct from a free kick just moments later. Alas all went wrong in the final minutes with the home side’s inability to defend two corners which produced two headed goals, relief and a narrow victory to the visitors for whom Abi Breban (3) and Jess Milford, were the scorers.
Besides Yukon, Laura Atkinson was the pick of the home players. Yes, shattered and disappointed, but the Robinettes can now concentrate on challenging for the Division One title.
