Activate 0, Budleigh Salterton 1

With the reduction in the number of teams which started the season, some clubs in the Women’s League have now passed the halfway stage in their fixture lists, so a win in last Sunday’s top of the table encounter in Division One of the Devon Women’s league would be a very good confidence booster, writes SpursTom.

The opportunity was there for table-topping Activate to exact revenge for an earlier in the season defeat to second-in-the-table Budleigh. The Robinettes knew that victory for them would move them to within three points of the leaders with two games in hand!

Both teams looked nervous in the opening exchanges. Too much of the play was in the central area of the pitch with the flank activity restricted to throw-ins!

The first half was a laboured affair and the half-time break was reached with neither team having been able to get then better of the others defence!

From the restart it was the Robinettes who increased the tempo and began to win plenty of the ball and they used possession far better. However, frustration was creeping in as attacks broke down or a passes went astray, and on several occasions the referee had words with members of both teams. You sensed that whoever scored first would win, and the decisive strike came in the 86th minute.

Abby Yukon took a chance, strode forward, unleashed a shot which the keeper could only parry, Celine White’s poaching instinct saw her first to react and the ball was in the back of the net much to the delight of her team mates!

Activate, to their credit, tried one more assault, but to no avail. It was as much a relief as joy which greeted the final whistle.

This rounded off a happy weekend for Budleigh Salterton.
