Last week the Symes, Robinson and Lee League Presentation Evening bought the curtain down on an enjoyable and successful competition.

Hosted by Paul Griffin and Terry Kelly, the programme began with a four-end knockout competition involving representatives from all clubs participating in the league and this year’s winners, repeating their success of 2013, were Sidmouth’s Wilf Raeburn, Mike Reader and Ron Cook, who each collected a bottle of wine for their efforts.

A splendid buffet supper was provided by Mo Bond and Dorothy MacConville and was greatly appreciated by hungry bowlers.

In addition to the cash prizes, generously donated by our High Street Solicitor sponsors, this year saw the inaugural presentation of the Harry Vanstone Shield to the league winners.

The shield was provided by friends and team mates of past captain Harry, who died last year, to honour his dedication and long service to the club. We were particularly pleased to welcome three members of Harry’s family who made the trip from Torbay to present the shield to the Madeira Reds.

Runners-up were the Budleigh Falcons and the Madeira Blues. This year’s winners of the knock-out competition and indeed the new custodians of the Les Thwaites Shield are the Falcons who made up for their disappointment in being pipped at the post for the league championship by defeating current holders Exonia in the final.

The last duty of indoor captain’s Peter Burch and Dawn Graham was to organise the Presentation Day which kicked-off with a mixed drive that produced plenty of light-hearted amusement and was followed by a magnificent sit-down buffet for which we thank all those ladies involved in it’s preparation.

This enjoyable final event was rounded of with Games Club president, Richard Odam, accompanied by his wife, Peggy, presenting trophies to our competition winners.

The men’s indoor AGM is being held at 10am on Thursday, April 17, and everyone is urged to attend.

The official Outdoor Opening Day is to be held on Saturday, April 19, at 2pm. Please do come along and let’s get the new season off to a good start!
