Budleigh glider pilot returns to the skies after 30 years

Devon and Somerset Gliding Club’s first new member of 2014 took to the skies on Sunday, writes Jill Harmer.

Douglas Boyle from Budleigh Salterton has decided to resume gliding at North Hill after a 30 year lay-off.

Douglas retired from medical practice three years ago and, having moved to Devon from Oxfordshire, now has the time to renew his love of flying.

Sunday was the only day we really got flying this week, but we made the most of it with 31 aerotow launches (the ground is still too wet to winch launch).

People on the ground may have noticed some aerobatic manoeuvres over Broadhembury on Sunday, as John Burrow from Taunton took the opportunity, with the clear skies, to validate his Gliding Aerobatic Badge.

Peter Smith from Yeovil and Paul Summers from Plymouth continued flying some training exercises for their forthcoming Glider Instructor Courses.

After a lot of hard work, Liam Vile from Exeter has managed to get gliding recognised as a sport by the Students Guild at Exeter University.

Planning for our seven week-long courses through the summer months is well underway. They’re open to members and non-members, and the courses are starting to fill up now.
