Budleigh end season o a high as Murphy leads men to victory at Bradninch

Budleigh skipper Joel Murphy returned to one of his former clubs and departed a winner as he saw his side claim a two wicket win.

Just four weeks ago many were tipping this fixture between the two sides relegated from the Premier Division twelve months ago, to be a title decider. However both went into the game with their promotion hopes ended after suffering late season losing runs.

Bradninch batted first and were quickly in deep trouble, three wickets down and just eight runs on the Kensham Park score board as Ben Phillips, with two wickets, and Joe Gore with one, claimed the early wickets.

The home side recovered, but a three wicket haul for Joel Murphy saw his side always in charge and, had it not been for a knock of 892 by the Bradninch overseas player Gian Botha then the home total would have been far less than the 184 all out from 43.1 overs.

The Budleigh reply was hit early by the loss of James Burke, but a 73-run partnership for the second wicket between Luke Peterson (38) and Elliot Rice saw the reply to 86-2 at the end of the 20th over. Rice was next out, 23 runs later for a personal; knock of 50 and then another quick wicket left the visitors 126-5 after 31 overs. It was an unbeaten 46 by Ben Phillips (snr) that saw Budleigh to a two wicket win with skipper Murphy the final wicket to fall in the league campaign.

The win meant Budleigh finished the season third, 19 points short of second placed Plympton who will play in the top flight next season. Coming down are Cornwood and Sandford whilst coming up the second tier from the B Division are Tavistock and Bideford.

So next season Budleigh will meet: Barton, Bideford, Bradninch, Brixham, Cornwood, Hatherleigh, Lewdown, Sandford and Tavistock in their 2105 A Division campaign.
