Exmouth Town 0, Budleigh Salterton 2
Budleigh continued their remarkable recent run over neighbours Exmouth Town by knocking them out of the Throgmorton Cup, writes Alan Beer.
In three meetings between the teams since Richard Pears took charge at Southern Road the current stats read; Budleigh two wins with the other meeting drawn!
This time it was Premier Division high-flying Town versus Eastern Division struggling (four defeats in five league outings) Budleigh, but by full-time the Robins were fully deserving of the place in the next round which takes them to Appledore on October 26.
Then home side had the first chance to net, but new striker Lewis Coombes saw his shot cannon off the crossbar.
Minutes later Budleigh took the lead when a Bret Wright corner was knocked home by Man of the Match Carl Everest.
In the 20th minute the lead was doubled when an Everest effort was blocked, but not cleared and Hugo Demetre, on for the injured Josh Sale, thumped it home. It could, indeed should, have been three before the break, but Matt Dawson spurned a gilt-edged chance.
In the second half the expected counter came from the home side but they were unable to get the better of the well organised Budleigh back line of Brett Wright, Carl Everest, Tim Nield and Darren Carr who set up a most effective shield in front of Adi Pullin in the Robins goal.
Budleigh were fully deserving of their success and the Greenway Lane hopeful get the chance to see them in more cup action on Saturday when Elburton Villa Reserves pitch up for a Graddon Vending Devon Premier Cup tie.
Budleigh team: Pullin, Sale (Demetre), Carr, Wright, Everest, Nield, Hill, Schlaefli (Williams), Dawson (Pollard), Pannell, Lever.
