Abbotskerswell II pitched up at Ottermouth to face a determined Budleigh 2nds who were already promoted and now looking to win the league, writes Phil Yolland.
Abbots won the toss and decided to bat. Budleigh’s openers got to work quickly with Adam Jones and James Plowman reducing the Abbotts to 43-4 by the end of their opening spell. Chris ‘Del monte’ Batton was next into the attack with his swinging banana deliveries causing the Abbotts all kinds of mischief, backed up by Jo Marley with his mercurial spin and a Budleigh Salterton fielding side that was not letting a bean squeak through it’s defence. With all these cricketing factors increasing pressure and tightening the cricket noose around the Abbotts, Budleigh sensed the vulnerability and roared onto sending all the Abbotts back to their changing rooms for 98.
No time for tea and straight back into action as Budleigh caught the distinct smell of glory on the Ottermouth breeze.
The opening pair not up to their usual standards, yet Joseph Marley found his form from the start of the season and was flicking balls all around the ground of his well centred body reaching his 50 with a huge six straight down the ground. James England backed him up with a cracking quick fire 28 not out and the two batsmen sailed the Budleigh batting side onward to home glory and a crowning moment with a consummate win over the Abbottskerswell side, to cheers from all the supporters, party music and champagne moments for all....
Budleigh now promoted, hope to keep their same side for the 2014 season, with the sincerest hope of carrying on their winning ways in the next division up. Budleigh 1st X1 have dropped down a league, yet a lot of the pivotal players are considering staying and next year could be a good year to really get BSCC back on the cricketing map, looking to host two strong teams ready to take on any opposition, as sometimes a backward step can produce two large forward ones as displayed by the Budleigh second string during this season. Sometimes we have to retreat to advance.
Budleigh seconds would all like to thank Cannon Carter for his brilliant captaincy this year, getting a marvellous team spirit, winning ways, lots of fun and enjoyment throughout the season.
Well done to everybody who took part in all matches as we all played a part and we want everyone to know that all efforts were greatly received.
Budleigh 2nd X1 would like to sincerely thank Nick England of DEVON CONTRACTORS for his continual support and very generous sponsorship of our group of players and the players of the 1st X1.
Wishing everybody a jolly nice winter and we shall reconvene on the fourth full moon of next year upon the grounds of Exeter University to start sharpening the skill sets for summer 2014.
