There was a welcome result for the Budleigh men in the annual match against the ladies at Cricket Field Lane on Sunday, as they took the spoils in the Captains Invitation match, writes David Roberts.

The last two matches had seen the ladies walking tall with consecutive wins so this result was well overdue!

In saying that, the rinks were shared, but the men won overall by eleven shots at 32-21.

The ladies of Eileen Burston, Lilian Grainger, Di Lowe, Ann Vincent and Mo Bond were taken to task by the men of Tony Lim, Peter Burch, Don Huish, Bill Barber and Gerry Roberts as the men took an early advantage racing to a 16-3 lead after eight ends and never looked back!

On the other rink, it was a much closer affair with the ladies of Melissa Camp, Hilary Medley, Joan Cowing and Joan Shaw keeping their noses in front to run out winners 12-9 against Gerard McCarthy, Mike Shaw, Leighton Burston and Brian Evans. Thanks are due to Ann Vincent and Mo Bond for providing a sumptuous cream tea to end a very enjoyable afternoon.

A vice president’s match earlier in the week held at home against Honiton saw a convincing win for the men of Peter Burch, Bob Gooch, Gerry Roberts and skip Leighton Burston, as they took total control of their rink winning 30-6. After the two successes for the men, fortunes were reversed as they took on South Hams in the last of the season’s Interclub matches, losing overall by 95 shots to 52. Congratulations, to Richard Cooper, Peter Nicholls, Peter Burch and skip Gerry Roberts as they won away from home fighting off a late comeback from their opponents to register the only rink to win 19-17. In the Tuesday Triples League there were wins for Eileen Burston, Reg and Margaret Ringsell for team Beech and for Margaret Avery, Mike Clark and Lilian Grainger for team Willow. This week sees the last of the matches with everything to play for in this very popular competition well organised by John Dill. The indoor competitions are now well advanced and the men’s competitions are now at the semi-final stages. Brian Crook, Leighton Burston, John Dill and David Roberts are through to the last four in the two wood.In the 106 competition, Don Huish is already through to the final after just pipping Leighton Burston and will play either John Dill or David Roberts. In the four wood competition, Paul Griffin will play John Dill and Gerry Roberts will play the winner of the match between Leighton Burston and Peter Burch. The Budleigh finals weekend is scheduled for April 14 and 15.

Over the next week the Les Thwaite final will be contested by the Exonia Eagles and Maderia Robins whilst the Budleigh Buzzards play the last of the Evening League matches against the Maderia Robins, who are chasing down third position.

The ladies entertain Honiton in a friendly match at home as the club prepares for the forthcoming outdoor season, one that is scheduled to commence on Saturday, April 21.
