The Budleigh men have struggled to make an impact in the Devon Over-60s league this season; having been outplayed most times, they have seen action in what is a very competitive league, writes David Roberts.

However, that all changed when they met Mid Devon in their latest match, one that ended with celebrations all round as the team recorded their first overall win, taking the honours by 90 shots to 81.

Wins on both rinks at home saw Bob Clifford, Mike Clark, Dick Mitchell and skip Andrew Cardy stay ahead from the start and register 10 shots over the last four ends to run out 28-21 victors.

Richard Cooper, Rob Gerrard, Peter Cooper and John Dill relinquished the lead on the 14th end, but fought back strongly scoring 10 shots to Mid Devon’s four over the last seven ends to take the rink 24-19.

On the away rinks, Keith Edwards, Peter Nicholls, Gerry Roberts and Brian Evans fought back well having been 12 shots down midway to close the gap, but just lost out 20-17.

On the other rink, Bill Barber, Brian Ward, Peter Burch and David Roberts were five shots ahead going into the closing stages only to drop five shots and suddenly find themselves three shots down going into the last end.

With the opposition holding two further shots and against the odds, skip David Roberts with his last bowl pushed the jack through to pick up three shots to tie the rink 21-all. A great finish for the team!
