Budleigh ladies just edged out in Mason Trophy match

A great overall performance by the Budleigh ladies against Maderia ladies saw them just miss out by one shot in progressing to the next round of the Mason Trophy, writes David Roberts.

This is a national competition regionalised in the early rounds and against a strong Maderia team the Budleigh ladies certainly held their own.

On the home rink, Ann Vincent, Lilian Grainger, Dianzee Lowe and Marilyn Jackson really played well together to win 12-9.

At Maderia, in another close affair, Margaret Avery, Bunty Hudson, Dawn Graham and Celia Mangeng fought hard, but were defeated 14-18. A loss overall by one host at 27-26. It must be said though – well played, ladies – a great effort!

The Budleigh Men played Maderia home and away in the Wednesday Over-60s League and once again walked away without any points, losing by 86 shots to 68.

Despite the score, all four rinks were well contested.

The best of the away rinks was that of Mike Clark, David Evans, Peter Burch and skip Paul Griffin, who held the lead for 18 ends (total 21) only to be pipped at the post 21-18.

It was certainly a great performance from the team and especially skip Paul Griffin, who received plaudits from the opposition, which was well deserved.

The other three rinks lost by five shots each, but given the resources available at Budleigh this was a commendable effort.

In the Tuesday morning Triples league there was a win for Melissa Camp, Bob Clifford and Dawn Graham 29-11.

Saturday saw the club’s Christmas Dinner celebrations held at the East Devon Golf Club with close to 50 members and partners attending - and what an enjoyable evening it was!

Members enjoyed fine food in great company and all superbly organised by Lilian Grainger and Mo Bond.

This week sees the ladies’ Christmas Party and the Christmas Grand Draw and Buffet whilst, on the fixture list, the men play Sidmouth on Wednesday in a friendly and there is a mixed friendly at home to Exonia on Friday.
