Budleigh Eagles edged out in Exonia Evening League encounter

The first matches were played this week in the knock-out competition for custody of the Les Thwaite Shield, which offers teams involved in the evening league a further opportunity of winning a trophy.

The first match featured Sidmouth versus the Budleigh Falcons and, on the night, the home side proved to be too strong for their opponents. Terry Kelly’s trio won by 14 shots and Brian Crook’s by 12.

The second match paired the Madeira Blues with last year’s winners from Exonia and the latter side go through to the next round with a 38-31 victory

Captain Peter Burch welcomed Devon Vice-Presidents hailing from Tiverton and Exeter’s Isca club for a two-rink friendly which could not have been more evenly balanced. On the final end with the score standing at 40-all, Gerry Roberts, who had skipped Don Huish, Rob Jerrard, and the captain, scored the one shot needed for victory, capping a very pleasant afternoon’s bowling.

The result of Budleigh’s encounter with the ‘Eagles’ in the second division of Exonia’a evening league was also not decided until the final end. With the ‘Eagles’ making a flying start, Don Huish, Leighton Burston, Burges Stace and Peter Burch, forced to step up a gear, drew level at 10-all on the 13th end and took the lead on the 14th. The ‘Eagles’ rallied in the final stages but were denied a draw when, on the last end, they scored just one of the three shots required, resulting in the final score of 20-18.
