The Budleigh Centenery Cup is always a competitive affair and this year’s event was no exception as the members turned out in force on a sunny afternoon at Cricketfield Lane, writes David Roberts.

Played in a round robin triples format, the winners this year were Peter Hillman, Marion Lacey and Bill Barber with an impressive plus 17 score.

Whilst playing well throughout, their last match secured the overall win as they registered 14 shots to nil to become this year’s champions.

The runners-up were Brian Ward, Di Dixon and Brian Goddard, who finished on plus six and were undefeated throughout the competition.

In other events there was a creditable performance from Gwen Hurst, Hilary Medley, Gerry Roberts and David Roberts when they visited Seaton to compete in the Perham Trophy, another round robin competition, finishing on a plus seven score.

After a slow start they went on to perform consistently and if it had not been for a big loss in their first match they would have been in contention for honours.

In the Exeter and District Over-60s League the men signed off with two points from their final match with Culm Vale in Division Two and will play again in this division next summer.

The winning rink was that of Tony Barnes, Peter Cooper and skip Andrew Cardy, who did well to hold on to an 18-16 win following a late comeback from their opponents.

The ladies lost their last match of the season in their Over-50s Triples League against Sidmouth to confirm their relegation to Division Two.

A very talented touring side from Northamptonshire – Cogenhoe bowling club – visited and took away a 103-63 win as the Budleigh bowlers struggled to make an impact.

The best of the Budleigh rinks was that of Brian Ward, Mike Clark, Peter Hillman and skip Mo Bond, who just held on to draw their rink 13-13.

As we approach the club’s finals weekend, this Saturday and Sunday (September 8 and 9), Brian Membery played well to reach the handicap competition final whilst Ann Vincent booked her spot in the championship final, in which she will play Di Dixon, and the three wood (106) final, where she will play Penny Weeks.

David Roberts will play Brian Summers in the two-wood final. All members are very welcome to come and watch the finals action which will start at 10am on Saturday and there will be refreshments available.

In the coming week, the club take on touring side Leicester City and there are men’s and ladies’ friendly matches against Sidmouth and Belmont.
