Budleigh Buzzards bounce back from Madeira defeat to see off Exonia

PUBLISHED: 09:48 20 February 2014 | UPDATED: 09:48 20 February 2014

The last week was a busy one at Cricket Field Lane with the staging of two friendlies and three matches in the Symes, Robinson and Lee evening league.

The first friendly was a mixed two rink game versus Feniton which was won easily by Budleigh with a combined score of 57 shots to 22.

Ann Vincent, Melissa Camp, Mo Bond and Peter Burch narrowly recorded the largest winning margin of the day with their plus 18 while Brian Evans’ side, whose card sported a five and a six, were just one shot behind.

Visitors from Madeira proved to be much stronger opposition and on this occasion Budleigh had to settle for second place with the score at 28-38.

Captain Peter Burch, with Tony Lim, Joan Cowing and Lilian Grainger came closest to winning a rink for Budleigh before going under by just two shots at 16-18.

The first evening match involved the Hawks and Sidmouth, with the latter side winning a close encounter by 37 to 33.

Peter Hillman, Leighton Burston and Archie Autton secured two consolation points for the Hawks with a 20-13 victory.

The Madeira Reds enhanced their championship prospects by beating the Budleigh Buzzards on both rinks and by 46 to 30.

The Buzzards made amends in their second match in a week when they defeated last year’s champions, Exonia, by 33 shots to 29. David Tomlinson, Alan Pearson and Paul Griffin won 19-14 and Mike Shaw’s trio went close, losing by just a single at 14-15.

Budleigh’s travelling squad in the Exonia league have notched up another victory, - this time at the expense of the Crusaders.

Against strong opposition, Peter Burch’s side needed to play well and did so to record a narrow 21-17 win.

This league, where the teams are all of similar strength, produces close and enjoyable matches, justifying the journeys when most evenings seem to be wet and windy.
