A two rink home friendly with friends from Phear Park to decide custody of the Old Oak Cup ended in Budleigh’s favour.

While Burges Stace, Rob Jerrard, Peter Evans and Gerry Roberts cruised to a 25-14 victory, the Park side skipped by John Dill finished strongly and missed snatching a draw with Peter Burch’s rink by a single shot with the score at 19-20.

As the Symes, Robinson and Lee Evening League programme draws to a close, the Budleigh Buzzards gave the leaders, the Madeira Reds, a severe test. Rink honours were shared and only four shots separated the two sides, with the Reds emerging the winners by 39 to 35. John Vanstone, Peter Cooper and George Woolacott salvaged two points for the Buzzards, winning 21-16.

In their second match of the week, the Reds shared rink honours with Sidmouth and won by 32 shots to 25. Mike Boman engineered Madeira’s success with his trio scoring thirteen shots over the last five ends taking their score to 20 to their opponents’ ten. With these latest victories the Reds look to have secured the league championship.

This week’s victory over the Country Boys in the second division of the Exonia Evening League added to Budleigh’s already impressive record, which now reads ten wins from 13 matches played.

Don Huish. Leighton Burston, Burges Stace and Peter Burch came from behind to win a tough match by 23 shots to 19 and maintain their position at the head of the table.

The team enjoy the ‘nom-de-league’ of the ‘Budleigh Boys’, - a serious misnomer given the quartet’s combined age often exceeds 280 years!
