Always occasions to savour, local derbies between Budleigh and Maderia are normally close-fought affairs and the Christmas fixture did not disappoint, writes David Roberts.

In what proved to be a ‘festive thriller’, Budleigh bowlers returned victorious from their Exmouth rivals with a two shot, 55-53 success.

With three rinks playing against each other, the pick of the Budleigh rinks was the four of Tony Lim, Ann Vincent, Di Lowe and skip Gerry Roberts, taking control and winning through 23-10.

It was this margin that became so important to the overall score. Eileen Burston, Di Dixon, David Evans and Joan Shaw came up against a very strong Maderia rink and lost out 13-25, but in a close affair the third rink of Lilian Grainger, Mike Shaw, Mo Bond and skip Leighton Burston fought off the Maderia challenge and won by one shot.

This certainly was a morale-boosting win for the Budleigh bowlers and a big thank you goes to the Maderia team for their hospitality and for a very enjoyable afternoon.

As the new year kicks off, the first week of 2018 sees the Budleigh men in Over-60s action against Exonia and they are also in action in the second round of the Top Club competition.

There is a mixed friendly home to Honiton and the Maderia Robins play the Maderia Eagles in the Coast Wealth Management Evening League.
